Sub Surface Celebrates 50 Years of Business
On 28th March 2022, Sub Surface proudly marked its 50th anniversary, having been founded by Clifford Marsden in 1972.
To celebrate this incredible milestone, the Sub Surface team enjoyed a well-deserved day out at the Flower Bowl in Preston. The celebration was full of energy and camaraderie as the team competed in a lively game of curling, followed by a delicious group meal. It was a perfect way to honour both our history and the people who’ve made it all possible.
Reflecting on this significant achievement, Chris Marsden, Managing Director, shared:
“Reaching 50 years in business is no small feat. It’s a testament to the hard work, resilience, and passion of our incredible team, both past and present. We’ve weathered economic storms, pushed the boundaries of geotechnical excellence, and grown stronger each year. I’m immensely proud of what we’ve accomplished together.”
Over the past five decades, Sub Surface has successfully navigated six recessions, an achievement that speaks volumes about the strength and stability of the company.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all Sub Surface employees, clients, and subcontractors for their unwavering dedication, loyalty, and support. Your contributions have been fundamental to our success and continued growth. We especially want to recognise some long-serving team members who have shaped the company’s journey:
- David Simpson (33 years) – Started as a young Graduate Engineer and is now Director of Sub Surface North East Limited.
- Julie Beirne (33 years) – Joined the company at age 15 straight from school. Over the decades, she has worn many hats from typing to receptionist to accounts to personal assistant to the directors.
- David Ravenscroft-Jones (32 years) – Began as a Trainee Laboratory Technician at 17 and has grown into our Principal Geo-Environmental Consultant.
- Simon Gabbatt (32 years) – Started as a Laboratory Technician at 19 after graduating from Preston College and now leads as our Laboratory Manager.
- Wayne Cook (29 years) – Joined straight from school at 16 as a Trainee Laboratory Technician and now serves as our Senior Laboratory Technician.
- Andrew Parker (24 years) – Brought valuable experience as a Geotechnical Engineer and currently serves as our Principal Geotechnical Engineer.
Their commitment and longevity are a true reflection of Sub Surface’s values and culture.
