A Career That Spanned 37 Years
After an incredible 37 years with Sub Surface, we recently said farewell to our colleague and friend, Dave Simpson, as he retired from the business.
Dave joined Sub Surface in January 1989 as a Geotechnical Engineer at our Preston headquarters, bringing with him experience from Nicholls Colton. It quickly became apparent that he had the dedication, technical ability and work ethic to help shape the future of the company.
As Sub Surface continued to grow, the decision was made to establish Sub Surface North East in February 1990. Although still only in his mid-twenties, Dave was recognised as having the drive, ability and personality needed to take on the challenge and was appointed Contracts Manager.
Building Sub Surface North East
Dave worked tirelessly to grow the business and, in December 1990, he was appointed a Director. Over the following three decades, Dave played a pivotal role in growing Sub Surface North East into the successful and respected regional business it is today.
Much of that success was built on Dave’s strengths: he was exceptionally good at quoting, winning work and building strong relationships with clients and subcontractors. His charismatic personality, commercial awareness and ability to maintain long-standing client relationships were key factors in the region’s continued success.
Colleagues will remember Dave for his tea and mud-stained plans, dog-eared files and his punctual Head Office trips for his afternoon brew. He also became well known for his water divining talents, although, like the industry as a whole, modern utility avoidance now relies on accurate service records, CAT scanning and other advanced detection methods.
Above all, Dave has made an enormous contribution to Sub Surface through his dedication, hard work and commitment to growing the business over nearly four decades. His efforts helped establish Sub Surface North East as a trusted name in ground investigation across the region.
A Lasting Legacy
Dave’s legacy is also reflected in the strong team and leadership structure he leaves behind. Having played such an important role in developing Sub Surface North East, Dave has now passed the baton to Alex Hunter, who will continue to lead the region and build on the foundations established over the years. With Alex at the helm, Sub Surface North East is in safe hands and well positioned for the future.
Wishing Dave a Happy Retirement
To mark the occasion, the team gathered at The Guild last Friday to raise a glass and thank Dave for everything he has contributed over the last 37 years. It was a fitting opportunity to reflect on his career, share a few stories and wish him all the very best for the future.
